“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress…” – former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
Part of UN Youth Western Australia's role is to facilitate the education of todays youth on local, national and international issues that affect them the most, allowing them to discover the world around them but more importantly to learn how to create change. UN Youth Western Australia writes a vast wealth of educational materials, ranging from mock resolutions students can debate in their own Model United Nations events to workshops produced for schools.
School Visits
UN Youth Western Australia offers schools the opportunity to have experienced members conduct interactive lessons on the role and structure of the United Nations and various international issues. A classroom programme can be designed to suit the needs of each individual class and may consist of a single lesson or multiple sessions.
Simulation exercises can also be arranged in which students participate in a mock session of the UN General Assembly or Security Council. These exercises are an engaging way of demonstrating the mechanisms and difficulties of diplomacy and international relations. Teachers may also use the simulation exercise as a class assessment. UN Youth Australia has previously conducted school visits on the history and structure of the United Nations, refugees, climate change, poverty and aid, peacekeeping and nuclear weapons.
Online Teaching Resources
To promote a greater understanding of the United Nations and international issues among secondary students, UN Youith Western Australia has produced comprehensive Online Teaching Resources available through our website. These resources contain detailed background information, interactive activities and lesson plans for various year groups in relation to a wide range of topics of international concern. Topics include issues such as climate change, human rights and international peace and security.
