SOUTHERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE 2012: Australia and the UN
30 March – 1 April
Australia is not the world’s biggest economy. Australia does not have the world’s largest population. Australia does not control key trade routes around the world. Yet Australia has a big role on the world stage.
UN Youth WA’s newest event, the Southern Regional Conference, is being held for the first time in 2012. The Conference will give secondary students in the South-West Region the opportunity to meet like-minded people, engage with the key international issues of our global society, and share their views with key stakeholders in the community.
The Southern Regional Conference is a three-day residential conference open to students years 10-12. Over the course of the weekend UN Youth WA runs workshops on the United Nations and key global issues, speakers sessions with thought-provoking people from all walks of life, exciting social activities such as Friday Night Games, Model UN debate and much more. In Model UN debate, delegates will represent a country, and advocate the country’s views on a wide range of global concerns – an exciting experience that introduces delegates to the complexities of global diplomacy.
The Conference theme is ‘Australia and the UN’. Delegates will learn about how Australia interacts with other nations, and gain insight into the methods nations use to ‘get their way’ from an Australian perspective. Students will also experience informal diplomacy that takes place outside of General Assembly and UN Committees, through fast-paced and exciting Interactive Problem Solving – where groups of delegates work together to formulate a solution to a hypothetical world emergency in a short time period: and their decisions will affect the outcomes for other groups.
As well as the amazing education opportunities, Southern Regional Conference is also about meeting like-minded people and participating in amazing social events. The Conference is run entirely by motivated UN Youth facilitators – it is sure to be a highlight of your year!
In concert with UNAA’s (United Nations Association of Australia) Security Council Campaign, delegates will debate the merits of Australia’s bid for a Security Council seat in 2013-14, and learn how Australian diplomats are trying to secure this spot.
Southern Regional Conference will be held at Binningup Beach Christian Youth Camp, 30 minutes north of Bunbury.
